Personal MBA Book - Second Edition

Today, I’m happy to announce that the second edition of my book, The Personal MBA: Master the Art of Business, has been published in paperback by Penguin/Portfolio. It’s in bookstores now.

Thanks to my team at Portfolio for their work on the second edition. It’s great to have a publisher that stands behind their books for years, and is willing to invest in creating great books.

What’s New in the Second Edition?

The second edition of The Personal MBA contains approximately twenty brand new concepts. You can see every concept in the book at

Most of the new concepts are in the Finance chapter. One of my design criteria for the first edition was to explain finance without relying on the financial statements, which most new businesspeople find intimidating or confusing. The original chapter did the job, but many readers were curious about the financial statements, so you’ll see a lot of new material that explains the three major statements, where they come from, why they’re important, and how to avoid major sources of bias in financial reporting.

All of the other new concepts flesh out major ideas in each of the remaining ten chapters. Every chapter has new content, and there’s new coverage of important topics like akrasia, career happiness, hiring, and business cycles.

New Reference Features

I also worked with Portfolio to enhance the book’s value as a long-term reference. In addition to the new concepts, a secondary “Key Terms" table of contents makes it easy to find specific ideas without combing through the chapter listings. Each mental model is also fully indexed in the main page index, so you can find all instances of every idea in the book.

Should you purchase the second edition?

Yes. I highly recommend that you purchase a copy of the second edition. Here’s why:

  • It’s more complete: the new concepts make the book even more comprehensive.
  • It’s easier to use: the new reference features make it even more useful as a reference.
  • It’s not expensive: since the book is in paperback, you can upgrade for a few dollars.

I recommend giving your hardcover edition away, either to a friend or your local public library. They’ll appreciate it.

The book’s new reduced price also makes it easier to give to friends, colleagues, or your team - anyone who you know is interested in starting a business, moving up in their company, or pursuing a new career.

Audiobook Edition

I’ve also recorded an unabridged audio edition of the book, which is available via, Amazon, and iTunes as of today. Audible is a great service that I personally subscribe to, so I recommend checking it out.

I’m very proud of this new edition of The Personal MBA, and I think you’ll find it extremely valuable in the months and years to come. Enjoy!
